The American Gold Buffalo Coin Series
First issued in 2006, the Gold Buffalo coin was the first .9999 fine Gold Bullion coin from the U.S. Mint. American Buffalo Gold coins are made to exacting U.S. Mint standards and prized throughout the world. Many years of Gold Buffalo coins are available, from 2006 to today. The U.S. Mint does not sell its bullion coins directly to the public. Instead, they distribute their coins to only a handful of authorized purchasers, like APMEX, who then sell the coins to the public.
The American Gold Buffalo Coin Design
The Gold Buffalo coin is based on James Earle Fraser’s famous Buffalo Nickel. The obverse shows the famous Indian Head design. Classic buffalo artwork is on the reverse, modeled after Black Diamond, the bison who lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. The Gold Buffalo brings back the design with finer detail and glory, creating a collectible coin that is both beautiful and valuable.
The design featured on today’s US Gold Buffalo Coin is actually a variation of the Fraser design that was used on the Indian Head Nickel.
The United States Mint operates out of several different branches across the country. The original mint location opened in 1792 in Philadelphia when the city was still serving as the nation’s capital. Today the modern Philadelphia mint is the largest branch, but is actually the fourth Philadelphia mint and was opened in 1969.
This year’s Gold Buffalo Coin features the now iconic Native American Chieftain side profile on its obverse. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed near the forehead of the profile, and the year of can be seen on the Chieftain’s shoulder.
The reverse of the coin showcases one of the most recognizable American animals, the American Buffalo. This depiction of the animal is actually based on a buffalo that was housed in the Central Park Zoo named Black Diamond. Above the animal are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Below the buffalo is inscribed the monetary denomination of $50 and “1OZ .9999 FINE GOLD”. Lastly the words “IN GOD WE TRUST” can be read just under the animal’s head.
The US Gold Buffalo was introduced in 2006 and has since become a favorite among gold bullion investors. The popularity of the coin is due in part to it’s .9999 purity, making it a great addition to any portfolio or collection. So go ahead and lock in the current price of gold today, and do so confidently, knowing that at SD Bullion you are always getting the lowest price online, period.
