James Earle Fraser is the designer behind the images on the obverse and reverse of the American Gold Buffalo. Fraser originally developed this design in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel and both images remained in circulation on the national five-cent piece until 1938.
The obverse of each American Gold Buffalo Coin comes with a right-profile portrait. This stoic indigenous figure was created by Fraser through the combination of facial characteristics from three real-life tribal figures in early 20th-century America.
On the reverse of the 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin, you will find a powerful American bison. The largest land mammal in North America, the bison is a mighty beast that played a central role in the culture, beliefs, and lives of the continent’s indigenous tribes.
