Gold Maple Leafs were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. At this point in history, the Gold Krugerrand from South Africa dominated the gold market, accounting for nearly 90% of all gold bullion available to private investors at that time.

When the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was first introduced in 1979, it was only available as a 1 oz gold coin with .999 fineness. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins while enhancing the purity of the 1 oz gold coin to .9999 fineness.

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of all 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs in this tube. There are three possible effigies of the Queen to be found on these coins. These include the second-generation design from Arnold Machin on coins through 1989, Dora de Pedery-Hunt’s third-generation design used from 1990 to 2004, and Susanna Blunt’s fourth-generation portrait used from 2005 onward.

The sugar maple leaf is found on the reverse of Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins in this tube. Walter Ott created this design of a natural sugar maple leaf in 1979 for the Gold Maple and it has been consistently replicated on the silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the coin to this day.
