In 1986, the US Mint authorized the production of the gold bullion coin we know today as the Gold Eagle. Authorized by an act of Congress one year earlier, the coins were to be minted with gold mined and sourced from within the United States. That same year, the mint decided to offer two different versions of the coin: bullion and proof. Both of these types of coins have the same design on both their obverse and reverse, the only difference being the proof coins are minted using a special, polished die. This helps to give the coins a more shiny, mirror like appearance.
Proof Gold Eagles have been minted each year since the series started. This version of the coin is minted specifically for collectors, and, consequently, is produced in much lower numbers. This means they are relatively rarer than the bullion coins and highly sought after by numismatists and those who like the series.
