Mexican Gold Libertads have been struck since 1981. Silver Libertad Coins joined the series the following year. Both gold and silver Libertads feature coins ranging in weight from 1 Troy oz to 1/20 Troy oz. While these popular coins are not considered legal tender, they’re still backed by Banco de Mexico based on the market prices for the precious metals. Notably, these Gold Libertads featured a design change as in 2000 the once front-facing relief of Winged Victory was changed to the three-quarter side profile we see on the coins today.

The obverse of each coin in the 2023 Proof Gold Libertad 5-Coin Set features the Mexican Coat of Arms. This symbol features an eagle clutching a rattlesnake in its talons and beak. The eagle is seen perched on a prickly pear cactus, while decorative laurels are tied together by a ribbon beneath it. Notably, the 1 oz version includes a ring containing the ten previous versions of this well-known symbol.

The reverse of each coin in this 2023 Proof Mexican Libertad 5-Coin Set features the well-known depiction of Winged Victory. The depiction is based on the statue sitting atop the Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City. Victory is seen holding broken chains in one hand and a wreath crown in the other. In the background, we can see the mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
