The Tudor Dragon is based on the historic Red Dragon of Wales, an emblem with a rich history in Welsh culture. The red dragon symbol has been associated with Wales since at least the 5th century AD. It appears in the Historia Brittonum, a 9th-century historical work, which recounts the legend of the red dragon (representing the Welsh) fighting the white dragon (representing the Saxons).
The red dragon was reportedly used later as a symbol by Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd in the 7th century. This helped establish it as a symbol of Welsh royalty and resistance against invaders. It was this emblem that the Tudors would use to establish their legitimate claim to the throne of England.
King Charles III features on the obverse of 2024 1/4 oz Gold Tudor Beasts Tudor Dragon Coins. His Majesty is shown here in left-profile relief in a design from Martin Jennings. This is the first effigy of Charles III and it captures the king without a crown on his head.
The Tudor Dragon is on the reverse of each 2024 British Gold Tudor Beast Coin in this tube. In this design, the Red Dragon of Wales is shown supporting a shield that features the Beaufort Portcullis, another symbol of family heritage used by Tudors to legitimize their right to rule.
