In 1913, James Earle Fraser became one of a number of American artists to help redesign American coinage. His design for the US nickel followed those of Bela Lyon Pratt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens in redesigning the US Eagle denominations, and preceded images from Adolph A. Weinman and Hermon Atkins MacNeil in redesigning American silver coinage.

On the obverse of the 2024 American Gold Buffalo is a right-profile bust of an indigenous tribal figure. This design from Fraser was a combination of the facial features and characteristics of three different real-world tribal elders in early 20^th-century America. The stoic figure has braided hair with feathers woven into the back.

The reverse side of 2024 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins comes with a depiction of the American bison. Also created by Fraser, this design captures North America’s largest land mammal in left-profile relief standing on small mound of dirt and grass as it grazes.
