In 1987 when the Royal Mint introduced the Gold Britannia Series, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was depicted on the obverse. In total, three different effigies of Elizabeth II graced the obverse of the coins. For the first time in the program’s history, a new portrait was featured on the coins in 2023 with the ascension of Charles III to the throne.

On the obverse of the 2024 British Gold Britannia, you will find the portrait of King Charles III. His Majesty is shown here in left-profile relief and is not wearing a crown in this design from Martin Jennings. This is the first-ever effigy of His Majesty and follows British tradition in switching the portrait relief and leaving out a crown for male monarchs.
The reverse side of 2024 1 oz Gold Britannia Coins comes with Philip Nathan’s depiction of the female allegory known as Britannia. Her majestic figure is shown in front-facing relief with a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left.
